Norovirus or ‘winter vomiting’ is the most common cause of gastro-enteritis in England and Wales and affects people of all ages. It is highly infectious and the common symptoms are: – projectile vomiting, – diarrhoea, – nausea, – raised temperature, – headaches and aching limbs. Cholera Outbreak Hits East Indian State
Panic spreads among the villagers in India’s eastern Orissa state, due to an outbreak of cholera (PRON CAH-leh-ruh). They say that they have not received adequate medical help. Five people died and dozens became ill as a cholera outbreak hit the Rayagada district of India’s eastern Orissa state. Despite the Orissa government’s claim to have effectively controlled the spread of the virus, residents of the affected areas claim that the administration has failed to provide adequate medical facilities to them. [Bimla, Tribal Villager]: (Oriya, Female) “We are facing lot of problems. Earlier, doctors were not coming to the village. If a person fell ill, we have to take him to far-off places. Now, after the cholera outbreak the doctors have come to the villages, and we are receiving treatment.” But doctors say the situation is now under control. [Prakash Kumar Rout, Doctor]: male (Hindi) “We have treated 23 patients of this village and now the situation is under control.” Cholera is a severe infection which primarily affects the small intestine. Its main symptoms include profuse watery diarrhea and vomiting caused by contaminated drinking water or infected food.

Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea that occur suddenly (within 48 hours) after consuming a contaminated food or drink. Depending on the contaminant, fever and chills, bloody stools, dehydration, and nervous system damage may follow. These symptoms may affect one person or a group of people who ate the same thing (called an outbreak). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in the United States, food poisoning causes about 76 million illnesses, 325000 hospitalizations, and up to 5000 deaths each year. One of the most common bacterial forms of infection, the salmonellae organisms, account for billion in medical costs and lost work time. Worldwide, diarrheal illnesses are among the leading causes of death. Travelers to developing countries often encounter food poisoning in the form of traveler’s diarrhea or “Montezumas revenge.” Additionally, there are possible new global threats to the world’s food supply through terrorist actions using food toxins as weapons. Despite this, the majority of parents surveyed had never heard of the virus3. The virus has been estimated to cause up to 14 children to die each year in the UK4. Although the majority of infections are relatively mild5, children can have up to 20 episodes of vomiting and diarrhoea in just 24 hours6. Outbreaks of gastroenteritis will usually cause children to be sent home from nursery or day care. In a survey, parents had taken time off work due to their child contracting gastroenteritis3. January 22nd sees the launch of the first Childhood Gastroenteritis Awareness Week with television personality, Philippa Forrester.
