SWINE FLU (THREATENS TO BECOME A FULL PANDEMIC)…

December 30, 2012 By News articles on health

Swine Flu cases on the rise … President Barack Obama said Monday that the outbreak was a “cause for concern” but not a “cause for alarm.” He said the federal government was “closely monitoring” emerging cases and had declared a public health emergency as a “precautionary tool” to ensure the availability of adequate resources to combat the spread of the virus. Israel and New Zealand, where 22 students and three teachers were quarantined after returning for a three-week trip to Mexico, are also investigating suspected cases. South Korea says it will test travelers arriving from the US Swine flu is a contagious respiratory disease that usually affects pigs. It is caused by a type-A influenza virus. The current strain is a new variation of an H1N1 virus, which is a mix of human and animal versions. When the flu spreads person-to-person, instead of from animals to humans, it can continue to mutate, making it harder to treat or fight off because people have no natural immunity. The symptoms are similar to common flu. They include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The virus spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes around another person. People can become infected by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or eyes. In 1968, a “Hong Kong” flu pandemic killed about 1 million people worldwide. And in 1918, a “Spanish” flu pandemic killed as many as 100 million people.

Producer: Centers for Disease Control. Creative Commons license: Public Domain Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae (the influenza viruses), that affects birds and mammals. The name influenza comes from the Italian: influenza, meaning “influence” (Latin: influentia). In humans, common symptoms of the disease are chills, fever, pharyngitis, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort. In more serious cases, influenza causes pneumonia, which can be fatal, particularly in young children and the elderly. Although it is often confused with the common cold, influenza is a much more severe disease and is caused by a different type of virus. Influenza can produce nausea and vomiting, especially in children, but these symptoms are more common in the unrelated disease gastroenteritis, which is sometimes called “stomach flu” or “24-hour flu”. Typically, influenza is transmitted from infected mammals through the air by coughs or sneezes, creating aerosols containing the virus, and from infected birds through their droppings. Influenza can also be transmitted by saliva, nasal secretions, faeces and blood. Infections also occur through contact with these body fluids or with …

Al Jazeera : UN Hit with Cash Demand over Haiti Cholera

December 27, 2012 By News articles on health

Petition made on behalf of more than 5000 victims of outbreak allegedly caused by infected peacekeepers from Nepal. The United Nations has been hit with a demand for hundreds of millions of dollars in reparations because of a year-old cholera outbreak that has killed more than 6700 Haitians. The demand was made on Tuesday on behalf of more than 5000 Haitian cholera victims and their families in a petition filed at UN headquarters in New York by the Boston-based Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti. The human rights group said the peacekeeping soldiers were not adequately screened by the United Nations. The human rights group argues that infected UN peacekeeping troops from Nepal, where cholera is endemic, caused the outbreak by dumping untreated waste from their rural base camp into a tributary of the most important river in the earthquake-ravaged Caribbean nation. “The cholera outbreak is directly attributable to the negligence, gross negligence, recklessness and deliberate indifference for the health and lives of Haiti’s citizens by the United Nations and its subsidiary, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH),” the petition said. It said numerous studies, including those by the UN, traced the virus to UN personnel from Nepal. “Until MINUSTAH’s actions incited the cholera outbreak, Haiti had not reported a single case of cholera for over 50 years,” the petition said. The petition sought a minimum of 0000 to compensate the families or next …

Plague Cruise Ship Oriana Docks In UK

December 25, 2012 By News articles on health

A luxury cruise liner described as a “plague ship” after an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug has returned to dock in Southampton. Around 300 passengers on P&O’s Oriana are thought to have been struck down with norovirus during a 10-night Baltic cruise. The company’s owners, Carnival, initially said there had been “an incidence of a mild gastrointestinal illness” among the 1800 people on board. Paul Gilman, who had booked onto the cruise, said: “It has been outrageous from start to finish. “People were falling like flies, yet the crew were trying to insist everything was fine. “Everyone is saying, ‘this is a plague ship’. It’s a living nightmare.” Carol Marlow, managing director of P&O Cruises, told Sky News the Oriana had undergone a “full sanitisation process” before it set sail from Southampton on December 4. She said the first cases of norovirus, which has an incubation period of between one and two days, were reported to the ship’s medical centre within a couple of hours of the vessel leaving port, indicating the virus was brought on board by one of the passengers. Ms Marlow, who sent a letter of apology to all customers, said: “We don’t want one person to be ill on any of our holidays, and we’ll learn from this and try to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” More than 750000 people could be affected by the latest outbreak of norovirus in the UK, according to estimates by the Health Protection Agency. The stomach bug is highly contagious and causes vomiting and …
