Beginner Yoga and How to Start Learning

June 27, 2012 By News articles on health

Before doing beginner yoga learn something about the various types of yoga. Not all forms are recommended for beginners. Know also that you can start slow often times doing modified postures (asanas) until you have gotten flexible enough to do the asanas the way they are supposed to be done. Next, it takes no fancy equipment to do yoga. You might need a mat, blocks or cushions though. However, these are not that expensive. Below is more detailed information about how to start learning yoga.

The Space that Is Needed

You can practice beginner yoga practically anywhere. At home just pick a spot on the floor in a room without distractions. Even when choosing a studio or gym environment look for a quiet atmosphere without things that will distract your attention. Also make sure the gym or studio is clean and well ventilated.

What Clothes to Wear?

You need some stretch or loose clothing to wear when practicing yoga. This will enable you to move freely without being restricted in any way. Sweat clothes, leotards, shorts are some examples of clothes that can be worn. Traditionally yoga is practiced in bare feet, but soft shoes or socks can be worn.

Is Equipment Needed?

No expensive equipment is needed, but a mat, cushion and/or a block might be. These make the sitting or lying positions more comfortable to do.

Tips

Do not have a full stomach when practicing beginner yoga. Eat about one to two hours prior to your yoga session. You can drink some water before the session but don’t let it be cold. If you must, you can have a light snack an hour before if needed. This snack should be some fruit or an energy bar and maybe some water but nothing heavy. Also make sure to go to the bathroom and blow your nose good and clear your throat is necessary.

When Is the Best Time of the Day for Yoga?

First thing in the morning is a good time to do beginner yoga or any yoga. It clears your head for the day ahead. It will also energize your mind and body. Once you start out and find that morning is the right time for you, you should do it daily. Warm up with the easy poses and work into the harder ones once you are warmed up.

Now at night just before you go to bed is another good time to do yoga. Make sure it is one of the relaxing types of yoga though. The breathing exercises along with the meditation that is involved with yoga, is great for making you sleep more restful.

You can practice beginner yoga anytime of the day that is most convenient to you. The sessions do not have to be that long either. They only have to be about 15 or 20 minutes to be effective, this is easy to work into a day. So try this yoga today and see what benefits your body will receive.
